Away from the Gift Shops: Mundane & Magical Acquisitions in a University Town

Away from the Gift Shops is a guide for those who find themselves in a town centred on an institution of magical learning, but who are uninterested or unable to enter. Presented within are three sections: inhabitants of the town who might teach magic-adjacent Advanced Skills, spells that might be picked up from a student during a night of revelry, and at least quasi-magical items to be found, borrowed, bought or stolen.

As anyone who has been to Lower Thunnick, home to the Collegiate Academy of the Warlock Arts, will tell you, places like CAWA tend to draw tourists to them. They, in turn, attract purveyors of tchotchkes and memorabilia that no member of the institution would be seen dead with (least of all the necromancers). This guide purposefully avoids mention of such establishments; doubtless the curious tourist will have no difficulty finding one and wasting money there.

This Troika! supplement features:

  • 9 NPCs from a university town, each with their own Advanced Skill to teach characters with the silver to spare, such as Wizard Fashion or Umbrella Wielding.
  • 24 spells, cooked up by the local wizards and accidentally shared during a bout of drinking. Come for the Unavoidable Death Beam, stay for the Sweat It Out.
  • 24 items, magical and non-magical, ranging from Mnemonic Vapour to Business Cards, likely to be found in a university town.
